Jerome the Suspicious Owl presents…

… The 2011 NBR NYC Marathon Afterparty!

In continuing the tradition established last year, our post-Marathon bath will be held at Industrial Estate on Flushing Avenue and will commence at 4pm the day of the NYC Marathon. Please see the Google Group posting for address details, as owl habitats are very fragile.

For this year, in order to raise more funds for NBR’s future endeavours and properly feed and intoxicate everyone who wants to partake in our bash, there will be a suggested donation of $10. Good things happen when you keep your birds of prey on proper budget! Follow this link below to donate:

PayPal Donation

Then, use this link to RSVP so we can buy enough Pies-n-Thighs, Jameson, Pork Slap, and other essentials to speed up your post-race recovery process!

Despite all these essential nuggets of nourishment, neither owl nor dove shall turn away any additional snacks, booze, and (especially) desserts offered to the gods of Marathon recovery!

I can’t wait to see all your tired, your weary, and your huddled souls on Sunday afternoon, and breathe new life into them!

Hey Gang,

Thank you for signing up to volunteer this Thursday at the JPMC Corporate Challenge.

  • Please arrive at 5:00pm at that location to help set up.
  • Please wear your NBR shirt/gear!

Remember, NBR will receive $500 from JPMC for our volunteer effort, which is only fitting since we single-handedly bailed out the banks in 2008 :o

Stenciling the Track: Report & Gallery
June 8, 2011, 8:00 pm
Filed under: Events, Inspiration, Members, NBR Goings On, volunteering

Last night a great group of NBR volunteers formed to stencil the track.  We stenciled the word “runners” (in three languages, english, polish, and spanish) at four points on the track, in the first three lanes.  NBR worked with OSA and the Parks Department to come up with the chalk paint (non-permanent so as not to void the warranty on the track), the font, and get the required approvals.  Misha said this was a project that took about a year and a half.

As we run on the track, lets make an effort to ask in a friendly manner, walkers, etc… to respect the first three lanes for running.  This respect goes both ways, we should also attempt to honor the other 6 lanes for walkers, etc… we can still run in those lanes, but we should make an effort to avoid walkers, not make them move for us.

This is a partial list but a really BIG THANKS!! to Misha, Aja, Todd, Charlie +1, Brian, Katie, Chris, Sherry (+ the paper towels!), John, Raymond +camera, Fernando, Anna, Chantel, Michael, and others…(I was tired and a little to focused on the painting to get a full list but you know who you are and you deserve a really big thanks!!).

Because the paint is non-permanent, we will have to touch up the stencils at times.  We will again ask for volunteers to help, it was pretty fast and fun with such a great group of people.  Now come on out to speed work on Thursday and enjoy the “running lanes.”

-Alex Walsh

PS.  Again when pointing out to other users that lanes 1, 2, & 3 are for runners, it is really important that we do this in a FRIENDLY manner.  This is a new development for everyone and may take a little time to become habit.

Filed under: Events, Inspiration, NBR Goings On, Races, volunteering

Hey NBR!

Thanks to our continued team volunteering efforts (NYC Half and Marathon Fluid Stations), we’ve officially been awarded FIVE of those fabled team spots for this year’s NYC Marathon.

Want one of those spots? Fill out this form no later than 11pm Sunday, June 12th.

The five NBR spots will be selected by a top secret allocation committee and announced by June 15th so that awardees can start to get their training on.
Good luck!

-Aja

FAQ:
Do I have to have applied for this year’s marathon lottery to be eligible?
No, but it is preferable if you did.

If I am awarded a team spot, do I have to pay for my entry?
Yes.

Is there any chance NYRR will give us more spots?
No, five is the max any team can get. (Yay for us!)

If I am a fast runner, will that help my chances?
No.

What *will* help my chances then?
Participation in NBR via showing up for races and group runs, volunteering, helping out with projects and other activities, and general involvement. Being an NBR leader or run leader is also great, but not required.

Any other questions? Please email nbr@northbrooklynrunners.org

NBR Team 2010 Marathon Spots!
June 4, 2010, 6:56 pm
Filed under: Events, Inspiration, NBR Goings On, Races, volunteering

So a few weeks back I posted something about Marathon Spot Allocation.

We have officially been awarded FIVE team spots for this year’s NYC Marathon– the most you can get as a team! However, I was notified after-the-fact that the spots are supposed to go *only* to people who entered this year’s lottery and were rejected.

But, I’m always trying to pull one for the team, and it should work out that we can get ONE  “wild card” slot that could go to either someone who entered the lottery or someone who did not.

NBR Marathon Spot Allocation “Applications” are due by Monday, June 7th, 11:59pm!
Spots will be allocated by June 15th.

Here’s what to Include:
1. Must prove yourself to be an active member of NBR: group runs, meetings, other events. Also indicate if you entered this year’s lottery or not, and if you’ve run the NYC Marathon before.

2. Must contribute to NBR: volunteer at events, be a run leader or help the group in other ways.

3. Express yourself creatively as to why you want to do the NYC Marathon this year (in writing, video, music, photography, food, etc.) and include a short description.

Please submit your applications and address any concerns or questions to Aja.

NBR’s Marathon Spot Allocation

Hi Team!

Many of you know by now that by doing Team Volunteering at NYRR Races
(next up: Brooklyn Half– we could still use some people, so please sign up) earns us (3-5) team spots into this year’s NYC Marathon.

We haven’t “officially” been given any spots *yet*, but hopefully we will in the upcoming weeks. But who gets to run those spots at the Town Hall meeting last month we discussed how NBRs might be able to get one of the coveted spots. Here’s what allocation within NBR is looking like…

NBR Marathon Spot Allocation:
1. Must prove yourself to be an active member of NBR: group runs, meetings, other events
2. Must contribute to NBR: volunteer at events, be a run leader or help the group in other ways
3. Express yourself creatively as to why you want to do the NYC Marathon this year (in writing, video, music, photography, food, etc.) and include a short description.
- Applications due June 7th. Spots allocated by June 15th.

Other Allocation Ideas: lottery and/or weighted lottery based on NBR participation, contests, etc.

If you have ideas for how allocation should be designed, please email me off-list.

Thanks!
Aja
