August Runner of the Month: Roe Gallo
Roe first officially joined the ranks of NBR in February 2020, “you know, the world blew up.” Despite the pandemic, she continued to be a committed member when the club restarted activities, joining Wednesday Night Beginner run and working her way up to Saturday Bridge Run, Donut Run and eventually Sunday Funday. “From there, I started run leading Donut Run from GAP with Nate this past winter, and this summer Sunday Funday with Angela, Hee Jin, Kat, Kevin, Aaron and Justin. If I had more hours in the week, I'd lead more runs.”
What do you do when you're not running?
Sit on the couch with my cat. Oh, and I work....in music. So I sit with the cat at a computer.
How did you initially get into running?
I ran distance in middle school and high school. When I got older, I came back to it as a way to reduce stress. Then I started racing again, got my coaching certificate and joined NBR!
What is your favorite race distance?
I'd say half is my sweet spot.
Best running memory?
First NYC Marathon (2017). I hit the wall, cried down 1st ave. Cried to everyone at Finish Line PT at mile 23. Then crossed the finish with a smile on my face.
Favorite running route in NYC?
I kind of love running to the Little Red Lighthouse
Any running-related superstitions?
I don't look at my pace during a race. I think it will put too much pressure on me.
What has running taught you or changed about you?
The marathon made me realize I’m pretty strong and can do anything I set my mind to, Even if I'm crying while I do it.
Favorite post-race food?
I do lead the donut run....
What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
Chafing
Best advice to running newbies?
Don't worry about your pace, just enjoy the run!
Current running goal?
One day...a BQ. I figure if I keep getting older, I'll get there as the overall time lowers....
Any other fun running facts about you?
I love popping blisters on my feet. OK maybe that was a gross running fact. Fun fact I am a Certified Track & Field coach and I'll be a certified Middle and Long Distance coach end of August.
