September Runner of the Month: Angela Hiner

Angela starting running with NBR in November 2019, shortly after the NYC Marathon. She met teammate Kevin Kalb because his daughter was a student in her sixth grade English class and they would chat about running at dismissal. “He convinced me to give training with other people a try, starting with Sunday Funday.” You can find Anglea as one of our run leaders at Sunday Funday and as one of the team’s Run Coordinators. She has also worked on some of the clubs Diversity Committee initiatives and often volunteers at our Community Outreach events.

What do you do when you're not running?
It pains me a little to write this, but Strava says I've biked even more miles than I've run this year. A lot of that is commuting from Prospect Heights to Williamsburg, where I work as a middle school teacher. I generally enjoy being outside and in motion.

How did you initially get into running?
I joined my town's summer track program in fourth grade. I had always wanted to play organized sports but had a lot of anxiety around team sports like t-ball. I've been running ever since.

What is your favorite race distance?
I can think of good things to say about any distance besides the 10k.

Best running memory?
I have loved both of my NYC marathons and feel very lucky to have those life experiences. Most recently, I convinced some NBR teammates to sign up for Finger Lakes 50s trail races this summer, and it was fun to try something new with friends.

Favorite running route in NYC?
There are so many, from ending a run at the beach to running to the Highland Park reservoir in the snow. I love the variety of areas you can see on a single run in NYC, and I've learned new routes through NBR. If I ever move, running will be one of the things I most miss about the city.

What has running taught you or changed about you?
Running has helped me to be a more confident and grateful person.

What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
Waiting in the port-a-potty line before a race.

Current running goal?
I'm training for the Philadelphia Half Marathon and hope to get my fastest post-college time.

Any other fun running facts about you?
My 2020 New Year's resolution was to do a trail race. Didn't happen! But this year, I ran the 25k at the Finger Lakes 50s, and had a great weekend with NBR teammates Rob, Justin, Betsy and Mike.
