March Runner of the Month: Casey Tauber

When did you join NBR and why?

I joined NBR in March of 2021 after moving to NYC at the end of 2020. I had previously lived in Melbourne AU and ran with AM:PM Run Club, and I was looking for a similar experience in my new home. I found both NBR and BKTC, but the number of runs NBR offered, and the fact that it was free, made it an easy choice!

In what ways have you been involved with NBR?

I've been a run leader twice during my NBR career (formerly being one of the TNT leaders and now being one of the Thursday Night Track leaders). On top of that, I try my best to represent NBR at as many races as makes sense each year for my specific training goals.

What do you do when you're not running?

Spending time with my partner and our puppy! As focused on running as we can get from time to time, nothing is more important than the team you have in your corner. I have the world's best cheerleader and confidant for all of the highs and lows. I also really enjoy home bartending and diving into the culinary side of mixing drinks!

How did you initially get into running?

I got cut from my high-school soccer team and was too small to play any contact sports :)

What is your favorite race distance?

I'm a middle distance track runner by trade and the one mile is my favorite distance. I feel like the event walks the perfect line of being fast and strategic. It's like running on a razor blade, you have to pace yourself to avoid blowing up, but if you don't set the rhythm of the race correctly early on, you won't have enough time to make it up before leaving potential on the track/road. Not to mention, I'd say it's one of the better, if not the best, spectator events of all the distance races.

Best running memory?

My first NYC Marathon in 2021. I was coming off of injury and just wrapping up my first year living in the City. Going in with no expectations and the goal to just enjoy every mile with fellow NBR teammates made the day one big party from start to finish. Whether you're running or cheering, nothing beats marathon day in NYC.

Favorite running route in NYC?

The Greenpoint waterfront along West and up to Blue Slip.

Any running-related superstitions?

I always have to shower before big races. It helps me get my mindset right and take the morning prep seriously. Another day at the office!

What has running taught you or changed about you?

I met my partner through the club, and I wouldn't be half the person that I am today without her!

Favorite post-race food?

Pork roll from Baker's Dozen...or beer.

Favorite song to run to / that makes you want to run?

Off the top of my head? Our Song by Silverstein.

Favorite running social media account?

For general running news, I don't think anyone does a better job than 'citiusmag'. For workout inspiration, 'trackallaccess' has helped me a lot. For a weekly newsletter, 'The Morning Shakeout' has been a great resource as well.

What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?

Trying to find ways to watch professional running events without paying for FloTrack or being awake at odd hours of the day/night.

Best advice to running newbies?

Most importantly, have fun! If we aren't enjoying what we're doing, why are we even doing it? More seriously, learn how to run smart in the context of your own goals. If you run your own paces/efforts, you'll increase longevity in this sport and stay healthy, which other than genetics, are critical to reaching your goals and potential. In the wise words of Ed Eyestone: "Consistent competence equals eventual excellence."

Current running goal?

Honestly, after a period of feeling burnt out from running, finding the joy in my training and staying healthy while doing it is my number one goal. As for times, I would love to break 2:00 in an 800m, 4:30 in the Mile, and 17:00 in the 5k.

Any other fun running facts about you?

I don't know if this is a fun-fact, but it was unreal to be able to run the 800m leg of the Club Distance Medley Relay at the Millrose Games this year for NBR. I like to think that we warmed up the track for the 3k and 1 Mile indoor world records to be broken :)
