September Runner of the Month: Casey Nelson
When did you join NBR and why?
Flying down the Rockaway boardwalk
I joined NBR this past February. I was thinking about joining a running club for a while after moving to nyc, but was a bit intimidated by all the options. Then Danielle DM’d me on Strava, so I figured this group seemed friendly!
In what ways have you been involved with NBR?
I go to the LC workouts (although not as much as I would like), and a lot of NYRR races.
How did you initially get into running?
I’ve been running since I was a kid. Started with running laps around ice rink parking lots as conditioning when I was a figure skater. Turned into my main sport after a few too many skating injuries that I couldn’t come back from.
What is your favorite race distance?
10 milers. They’re like halfs, but without the final 5k where everything falls apart.
Best running memory?
Mile 20-ish of the Philly Marathon (the Manayunk out and back). The amount of spectators that come out to that narrow street is incredible, especially since it comes after a pretty long stretch of silence.
Favorite running route in NYC?
I’m a big fan of the Central Park loop. It gets super crowded for sure, but I think that makes for some good people watching.
Favorite post-race food?
It takes a long time for me to get an appetite back after a race, but I do have a favorite pre-race dinner. I get spicy mango shrimp fried rice from Fan Fried Rice Bar whenever possible. I don’t think anyone would recommend “fried” or “spicy” before a race, but it works for me.
Favorite song to run to / that makes you want to run?
Love a good Beyoncé but really any music is good. I just hate running with silence and my own thoughts.
Favorite running social media account?
I like Phily Bowden’s videos. She keeps its real, but is also super fast.
What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
I think the amount of things that can go wrong in race day outside of your control is stressful and sometimes makes it hard for me to motivate myself to shoot for a goal. I definitely need to constantly remind myself that even if race day doesn’t go as planned, it doesn’t mean all the training wasn’t worthwhile.
Current running goal?
I’d love to do a sub 2:50 marathon, but I think I’d finally need to do a flat one to get it done (Chicago 2026 maybe )
