October Runner of the Month: Joseph Logan

Joseph first joined NBR in the Summer of 2019 after discovering road racing earlier that year. "[I] was interested in seeing how I could improve." He is one of our Mens Local Competitive runners, is currently leading our Wednesday AM Pilot Run, and prior to COVID, he was the Just South Tempo Tuesday run leader. He is also training for the virtual NYC Marathon on 11/1 and raising money for the NYCLU. You can find his donation link here!

What do you do when you're not running?
I design exhibition catalogues for contemporary art museums

How did you initially get into running?
I did a Ragnar race with my Crossfit gym in the spring of 2018 and realized I had the potential to run pretty fast for my age.

What is your favorite race distance?
For now it's the mile, but we’ll see if my first marathon (Nov. 1) changes that.

Best running memory?
So far every race is pretty great as I’m still setting personal records with most of them. I realize that this won’t continue forever. It was fun to get to the semi-final round of the Trials of Miles masters tournament this summer during which I set PRs for the mile (4:54) and 5k (17:18)

Favorite running route in NYC?
Prospect Park, without a doubt.

Any running-related superstitions?
I am not a superstitious person.

What has running taught you or changed about you?
I was the slowest guy in my high school cross country team, so my recent efforts are pretty redeeming. Also I’ve really enjoyed the social aspect of NBR, especially the friendships I’ve made in the masters group. Lastly, for me running has been an important antidote to craziness of COVID and our current political situation.

Favorite post-race food?
Banana blueberry peanut-butter avocado spinach smoothie

Favorite song to run to make you want to run?
Um… soundtrack to Chariots of Fire? (no-one under 45 probably knows what that is). Kidding I guess, but I don’t listen to music when I run.

Favorite running social media account?
I am a newbie so not really aware of many. Open to suggestions… Anything particularly for masters?

What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
All the stinky laundry my partner has to put up with.

Best advice to running newbies?
Stretch!

Current running goal?
Run the marathon under 3 hours on Nov, 1… and to raise at least $5,000 for the NYCLU and ACLU in doing so. Donation link here: https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/team-nclu-2020-tcs-new-york-city-marathon/josephlogan5

Any other fun running facts about you?
The road I grew up on in Colorado has become a weird Mecca for distance runners… Magnolia Road outside of Boulder, Colorado.
