October Runner of the Month: Shanna Heaney

Shanna joined NBR in February of 2021 after moving from upper Manhattan to Williamsburg. “I remembered seeing NBR's flag & positive energy at past NYRR events I'd run, and was excited to find that NBR's McCarren Park meeting place was close to my new apartment!” Although a newer member of NBR, Shanna has already made a great impact, running an impressive mile time at the NBR Track Meet this summer.

What do you do when you're not running?
I work at an AdTech startup called GlassView, and in my free time I'm a big fan of concerts of all genres, hiking, traveling (safely of course), & the beach.

How did you initially get into running?
I wasn't a great 'ball sports' athlete in high school, but I joined the track team (no tryouts/cuts yay!) and developed a passion for middle-distance running. From there I somehow ended up as a captain of the Fordham cross country and track & field teams in college. 4 years out of college my love for running is still strong, and I enjoy road racing from the mile up to the occasional half marathon+

What is your favorite race distance?
As a middle distance runner at heart, I'd have to say the mile! While the legs may be going lactic, the mile is such a fun challenge.

Favorite running route in NYC?
I'm a sucker for Central Park mid-morning on a weekend, particularly the bridal path! The energy of being surrounded by runners, walkers, & bikers in the park can't be beat!

Any running-related superstitions?
Special socks & extra ponytail bands are a must for me! My braid fell out during a race once & I never want to go down that tangled road again!

Favorite post-race food?
May be a drink rather than food but I looove a Slurpee after a hot one! Bagels would be a close second, everything with a fun cream cheese for sure!

Favorite song to run to make you want to run?
AVICII would have to be my most tried & true, I love some beats to get hyped!

Favorite running social media account?
I'm not a Strava person but love to follow some of my badass faves on Instagram.. Emma Coburn, Nikki Hiltz, Molly Seidel, Grayson Murphy, Sydney McLaughlin, & Alysia Montaño to name a few!

What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
So much laundry!

Best advice to running newbies?
Take it easy & enjoy it! Every day doesn't need to be a hard effort.

Current running goal?
To conquer the NYC 2022 marathon! Will be my second crack at the marathon distance!

Any other fun running facts about you?
I attempted a beer mile early in the lockdown times... let's just say chugging is not my strong suit!
