July Runner of the Month: Erica Dean

Erica Dean joined NBR after she moved to NYC in 2018 and learned about 9+1 to the NYC marathon from a coworker. “I decided (out of the blue) to see if I could qualify for the NYC Marathon. I wasn't a runner, had no idea what I was doing and thought I could benefit from a running club. At my first few NYRR races, saw a ton of NBR singlets - decided the team must be pretty cool if so many people were wearing the singlets. And, in July of 2019, I ran my first race as an NBR team member!”

In what ways have you been involved with NBR? Volunteering and NBR JC Run Leader!

What do you do when you're not running?

I'm the Chief of Staff for the NYC Department of Homeless Services, so I have to be available 24/7 - which means I'm attached to my work phone. The only time I don't need to be next to my phone is when I'm running - so, I run as much as I can. I also have the most perfect (dog) son in the whole world - so I spend a significant amount of time hanging out with him.

What is your favorite race distance?

I've only been running for ~3 years (minus 1 year due to injury), so I'm still trying to figure out my strengths. I do know that the 5k is my mortal enemy, though!

Best running memory?

OSR 10k - the most intimidating, unforgettable and rewarding race of my life!

Favorite running route in NYC?

I don't think I have one - as long as I'm running with good company, I'm happy to go wherever!

Any running-related superstitions?

The night before every race I eat salad and pho.

What has running taught you or changed about you?

Running is so important to me and fills every part of my life. I began running at the age of 32 and never expected it to become something that defines who I am. It's taught me self-control, patience, determination, focus...and the list goes on. But most importantly, it grounds me.

What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?

Injuries and losing toenails.....

Best advice to running newbies?

Not every run needs to be fast! I learned the hard way - have a lot of EZ runs and enjoy them. Then, when it's time for your speed work/tempo sessions, your body will be ready to work hard.

Current running goal?

I'll be running the Chicago Marathon this year - it will be my first marathon ever AND falls on my birthday!
