April Runner of the Month: Thomas Abbott
Thomas joined NBR in January 2021 while looking for help training for a half marathon. His brother had signed his family up for a multi-sport relay and he was doing the road run. Although he had stopped running a few years before and had never run the half marathon distance before, he was ready to give it a shot. “NBR helped motivate me and give me the confidence to push myself a little harder.” You can find Thomas as one of our Just South GAP run leaders and enjoying the camaraderie of the group.
What do you do when you're not running?
Biking, camping and cooking, sometimes sequentially. I’m privileged to be able to make music to share with others as well.
How did you initially get into running?
I started running later than some, in my 30’s, to support physical rehabilitation and mental health. It’s been great to re-engage with those benefits this past year.
Best running memory?
Lots of good ones! It’s a great way to explore while traveling. Highlights include running my first 10k in Vienna, running trails around Banff and “discovering” unfamiliar city parks and roads. Oh, and the Pulaski Classic.
Favorite running route in NYC?
Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetery, but I love the bridges too.
Any running-related superstitions?
Not a one.
What has running taught you or changed about you?
Showing up is more than half the battle. Once I’m out the door and on my way, I win, everything else is a bonus. Patience and perseverance pay off.
Best advice to running newbies?
Go slow and enjoy it! The experience is the payoff for me, whether it’s tired legs, bad weather or a fast and glorious day. It’s supposed to be fun, even when it’s hard.
Current running goal?
My current running goal is to gain a *little* speed. Just a little. Without injuring myself.
