May Runner of the Month: Masamichi Udagawa

Masamichi joined NBR in 2018 just before the NYC Marathon. “I was recruited to be the third runner for the point race.” He has been a huge contributor to NBR in our Club Points races, running amazing times and placing top 3 within his age group at the 2022 NYC Half and Washington Heights 5K. Masamichi’s favorite thing about being in NBR is the support from teammates. “I am very much enjoying the camaraderie of the Grand Master runners on and off the race courses! It is a great source of inspiration and motivation.”

What do you do when you're not running?
Running is my only “hobby”, so outside of that, I am just working, reading, cooking, drinking, sleeping...

How did you initially get into running?
I have been fond of running since I was young, but just casual short jogs. In 2004, I was quite inspired by a friend of mine running his first NYC marathon. After doing nine NYRR races in the following year, I ran my first marathon in 2006 with an ok time. Then, at the 2009 Brooklyn Half, I was able to time qualify for the first time. That got me really started.

What is your favorite race distance?
1/2 marathon. I like Staten Island Half and Brooklyn Half.

Best running memory?
2017 NYC Marathon, when I was able to run my first NYC sub-3 race. It took me quite a while to get there with a few near-misses prior to that. I did my first sub-3 at 2015 Berlin, but I really wanted to make it in NYC.

Favorite running route in NYC?
Hudson river park. Though it is not a good training route (very flat), the convenience (I live nearby) and the scenery make it my favorite. The Prospect Park loop is my close second favorite.

Any running-related superstitions?
No

What has running taught you or changed about you?
Importance of persistence and patience.

Favorite post-race food?
Steak and eggs with beer or Bloody Mary.

Favorite song to run to make you want to run?
No music for me. I need to hear the surrounding environment when I run.

Favorite running social media account?
Strava, though I am not too active...

What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
I get quite anxious when I can not run due to a running-related injury. Probably everyone feels that way...

Best advice to running newbies?
Slow and steady wins the race

Current running goal?
I still would like to improve my PR. Also, a sub-3 marathon when I hit 60 (I’m 57 now).
