June Runner of the Month: Haley Snyder

Haley joined NBR in September 2021, attending plyo as her first “run”. “I joined NBR because I was looking for a group to run with and NBR seemed like an awesome, inclusive community!” Haley is one of our Track Meet coordinators and a run leader at plyo, as well as a lover of Gilbert’s post-plyo baked goods.

What do you do when you're not running?
I like to hike, ski, read, cook, bake, hang out with friends, check out new restaurants, go to comedy shows and breweries (Sun Up at Talea is a favorite). I love TV and film - Severance is the best show out there right now in my humble opinion.

How did you initially get into running?
The pandemic hit and suddenly we had some free time on our hands - my boyfriend decided to train for a half marathon and I didn't want to get left in the dust. So I hopped on the bandwagon and am so glad I did!

What is your favorite race distance?
I only started racing this year with the 9+1 series, so out of my limited experience I would say 4 miles is my favorite. That is also associated with good 4-mile Turkey Trot memories back home in Maine.

Best running memory?
My first half marathon in November 2021 was the best. It was in my hometown, which is also in the greatest state in the US (Maine). It was perfect weather, a beautiful route right by the ocean, I felt awesome physically and beat my goal time! We celebrated after with Shipyard and burritos.

Favorite running route in NYC?
I love running over the Kosciuszko Bridge and across LIC to the Pulaski Bridge. The Manhattan view from the Kosciuszko is beautiful and it's never crowded, with a great breeze that occasionally turns into a full-fledged gale.

Any running-related superstitions?
I don't think I do!

What has running taught you or changed about you?
It's definitely made me a happier, more content person. I feel more in tune with my body and deliberate about what I'm putting into my body. And when I don't run for a few days, I start to miss it!

Favorite post-race food?
A fish burrito from Tacombi and a hazy IPA!

Favorite song to run to make you want to run?
La Vie Boheme from Rent

Favorite running social media account?
Molly Seidel's instagram!

What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
I think the worst part about being a runner is leaving a gathering early when you have a long run the next morning. But that also might be the best part!

Best advice to running newbies?
Build up mileage slowly! And take the easy runs EASY. Also, beer hits different after a run.

Current running goal?
My current running goal is to run the Maine marathon in October 2022!

Any other fun running facts about you?
This isn't exactly running related, but I hiked the Long Trail in Vermont in July 2021!
