June Runner of the Month: Carla Murray
1. When did you join NBR and why?
I joined North Brooklyn Runners in 2022. For a long time I didn't really feel comfortable running with other people. I was pretty nervous, but the runs were convenient to my apartment so I thought I'd try it out. My second run with NBR was Monday Night Easy Run over the Kosciuszko Bridge, and it was dark out. I wouldn't have gone running in the dark by myself, and the bridge was so beautiful at night. I ran with a run leader who ran a slower pace that made me feel comfortable and told me all about the club. I was hooked after that. Thanks, Seth!
In what ways have you been involved with NBR?
I've done some of the volunteer opportunities in the community and at a couple of races. I like going to social events when I can. I've been to almost every run at least once. I'm a party pace run leader at Monday Morning Easy Run.
What do you do when you're not running?
I love exploring the city and going to Broadway shows. I'm a knitter. I play instruments (flute and piano) and sing, but not as often as I'd like.
How did you initially get into running?
I didn't run at all in high school or college. I thought I wasn't able to because I'm short and I wasn't athletic. Then around when I turned 30 I saw that an old friend of mine (also short) was running the Boston Marathon. It made me think maybe I could run too. I started out just wanting to be fit/lose weight, but as I got into it I found that it was actually really beneficial to my mental health.
What is your favorite race distance?
Not sure yet! I'm warming up to half marathons.
Best running memory?
Finishing my first marathon. If you've run a marathon you know the mix of emotions at the finish is just wild. It was the Philadelphia Marathon and I ran it with a friend. The crowd was pretty fun. I ran slower than I needed to in order to stick with my friend, so I felt good enough to take a beer from a stranger later in the race. That's the only time I've done that.
Favorite running route in NYC?
Anything along the waterfront. I really like Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Any running-related superstitions?
No, but don't ever wear the wrong socks.
What has running taught you or changed about you?
It's made me into an athlete and taught me how to be persistent and sit in discomfort.
Favorite post-race food?
I ate a sandwich after a recent run and that was pretty satisfying. Or I'll go for the local specialty, which at two of my marathons was a hot dog (Chicago and Detroit).
Favorite song to run to / that makes you want to run?
Whatever they are playing over the loudspeakers before a race.
Favorite running social media account?
@des_linden because she's my favorite runner.
What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
Laundry.
Best advice to running newbies?
Don't worry about your pace. Also, you DO NOT have to run a marathon to be a runner.
Current running goal?
Staying healthy and having fun with it.
Any other fun running facts about you?
It feels weird to say but a number of people have told me I've inspired them to start or get back into running, which feels great. Also, I've run five marathons.
