NYC Marathon Team Spot Check In: Beth Masterson

1. Tell us a little bit about how you came to be involved with NBR. What was your first run? How long have you been involved?

My first run was a Saturday Bridge Run in 2009, I believe around the time NBR was formed. I fell in love with the group's relaxed and fun vibe. Back then, I was just looking for some running buddies, nothing too competitive.

My proudest claim to fame within NBR is being one of the first 5 females to attempt and complete the Crownimal in 2013. You'll spot my name at #10 on the list. Shout out to Emma, Sue and Marie for the support as I definitely wouldn’t have stuck it out without them!

2. How is marathon training going? Are there any specific workouts that are really moving things along for you? Tell the world a good NBR long run story.

Great! I ran a local NJ half marathon as a marathon pace tempo workout on tired legs that was a bit painful, but gave me some confidence for race day. And I’m running Chicago marathon as a little “tune up” so I am in full marathon race mindset already.

3. Which NBR runs are you attending regularly to train? Are there any NBR members who inspire you to train hard(er)?

Since I live in New Jersey I can’t attend the regular runs but I’ve made it to several races this year and have had fun meeting new members as well as reuniting with many old friends. I’m really inspired by all my teammates. It’s amazing to see how much NBR has grown since when I first joined!

4. What does it mean to be chosen by your peers for a coveted NBR marathon team spot?

I am so grateful. The last time I ran the NYC marathon back in 2010, I proudly represented NBR, and I can't imagine running NYC again without wearing the NBR singlet. There were so many cheers from the crowd, and let's not forget the Mile 12 water station - hands down, the absolute BEST!

5. What do you plan on eating post-marathon? What about the night before?

My perfect post meal would be a breakfast sandwich and salty fries accompanied by a pumpkin beer. The night before will most likely be a traditional pasta dinner – I don’t usually stray from this.

6. What inspires and motivates you to run this year's NYC marathon?

Being part of NBR again, alongside this remarkably talented group of runners, is incredibly motivating! We have a strong group of Masters women running the marathon this year and it's been so inspiring to be on this training journey with them.  We're currently in 3rd place for Masters 40+ Women and are going to work together in the marathon and these last few club races to hopefully secure a top three finish for the year.

Also my kids motivate me a lot. Since I spend a good chunk of time away from them to train, I thought, why not be efficient and add another marathon to the mix while already training for Chicago?! I'm all about making the most of my time. My thoughts often turn to my family during races. It serves as a powerful motivator, inspiring me to pour my heart into every stride. I want the time away from them to be worth the effort.

7. In your head, what animal (real or fictional) do you think you most resemble when you're running?

I’ve had the nickname “The Beast” since I ran cross country in high school and I definitely make some beastly faces during the last stretch of a race. It’s pretty scary.
