NYC Marathon Team Spot Check In: Elena Zeller

1. Tell us a little bit about how you came to be involved with NBR. What was your first run? How long have you been involved?

My first run with NBR a Saturday bridge run. It was in December 2014 when I was just barely able to run a 5k and I was looking for motivation. And then I got sucked in.

2. How is marathon training going? Are there any specific workouts that are really moving things along for you? Tell the world a good NBR long run story.

Training has been going pretty well, though with school starting up again, as a teacher it’s been a challenge to get all my runs in. I did all the summer streets runs with Narwhals this summer and those were a blast. My most memorable one recently was on a Sunday when I was trying to do 16 and there was a chance of rain later in the day. However the humidity turned into a torrential downpour. My group went from talking about soaking our feet in ice water when we got home to sloshing through puddles as we crossed the street. I was intending on either running or biking over the Williamsburg to get home but then it started thundering so I just ran to the subway.

3. Which NBR runs are you attending regularly to train? Are there any NBR members who inspire you to train hard(er)?

I’ve been going to a mix of Narwhals and Sunday Funday and I usually try to do at least MNER as well. I’m inspired by all the party pacers, especially Roe and Clare and Mary Kate.

4. What does it mean to be chosen by your peers for a coveted NBR marathon team spot?

I’m honored to be chosen because NBR was really my gateway and inspiration to try a new sport as an adult after not ever being a “real” athlete. And running has been so transformative for my life.

5. What do you plan on eating post-marathon? What about the night before?

Pre marathon: some sort of pasta, cacio e pepe if I can find it and not have to cook. Post marathon: burger, pizza, beer, whatever.

6. What inspires and motivates you to run this year's NYC marathon?

I’m inspired to run this year because I want a redemption race over last year, which I hated starting on the Verrazano. I want to buy the jacket this year and not regret it.

7. In your head, what animal (real or fictional) do you think you most resemble when you're running?

In my head I look like a gazelle. In reality I don’t want to think about it.
