July Runner of the Month: Darren Price
Me at the NYC marathon last year.
When did you join NBR and why?
I joined the Google Group in something like 2014 after seeing all these super fast people wearing cool black and white singlets running around Williamsburg when I moved to the neighborhood. But I didn’t actually make it to a run until I decided to give a Saturday Morning Bridge Run a go after leaving and then moving back to the city in the span of 8 months in 2017. Since then, I’ve been hooked. Now you’ll find me pretty regularly at Thursday Night Track, the bar AFTER Thursday Night Track - and somewhat less regularly (but I swear I do my best to make it every week, it’s just hard to wake up early!) at Sunday Funday.
In what ways have you been involved with NBR?
Besides running with and cheering on my teammates, I’m one of the web coordinators for the club. That means I’m the guy bugging you all when you are nominated for Runner of the Month (including this one!) Shoutout to Jay, the true king of the web coordination team, though.
What do you do when you're not running?
I work in TV news, which is less exciting than it sounds, and I’m also a homebrewer, which is way more exciting than it sounds (the stories I could tell you about yeast, hops and malt. Also insert plug for my homebrewing club, the Brewminaries, here.)
You can also usually find me in McCarren Park with my dog Bruno, who is my main running buddy, or complaining about my various running injuries with my wife, Hannah (we also like to go camping.)
How did you initially get into running?
I’ve been a regular runner since the summer before my freshman year in high school, when I got up one day, and for no particular reason at all, I decided to go for a run. I ran cross country, the 800m (poorly), 1600m (less poorly), and 3200m (very, very poorly) in high school track. I was never the fastest kid on the team, but aside from a short break in my early 20s where I discovered cigarettes, I’ve been hooked ever since.
What is your favorite race distance?
Like I bet it does with most of you all, it changes based on how deep I am into the marathon training season. Two weeks post-marathon? Definitely the marathon. Six weeks pre- through 20 minutes post-marathon? Anything but the marathon.

The beers I made for people who helped me get to London.
Best running memory?
I’ve had a bunch, but it’s hard to beat my 2023 London Marathon experience. It wasn’t a PR or anything, but I got to run for my dad, who had a stroke a few months prior that left him unable to use his left arm and leg (he’s come a long way since!). It was the only race I’d ever fundraised for and I was able to raise more than $5,000 for The Stroke Association, which helps people like my dad get running again. A bunch of you even donated and got some of my homebrew for your trouble.
My wife and four of my best friends made the trip across the pond to watch me run and toast me at the pub after the race. Just can’t beat it.
Favorite running route in NYC?
I mean, it’s really, really hard to beat the McCarren Park track. There’s just something about knowing exactly where you are at all times and blasting repeats as fast as you can.
Any running-related superstitions?
As much as I love the team Tracksmith singlets, mine is cursed. I will wear it for an easy run or maybe a workout here and there - but it is off limits for races. It knows what it did.
What has running taught you or changed about you?
Running has been such a big part of my life for so long, it’s almost hard to remember a time before I was a runner. But I know that running has made me the best version of me. It makes it easier for me to handle stress and stay calm. It helps me work through difficult problems in my life. And it’s taught me that I am strong enough to do hard things.
Favorite post-race food?
Breakfast burritos from Santa Fe BK after a long run are pretty hard to beat.
Favorite song to run to / that makes you want to run?
My running playlist is truly an embarrassment and Spotify judges my entire music tastes off it. Yes, Party Rock Anthem is on the playlist.
Favorite running social media account?
I’m a massive running shoe geek, so Believe in the Run and Kofuzi are both in my regular rotation.
What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
Every aspect of summer running. The humidity. The sweat that never stops and makes you look like you just went for a swim. Your shoes getting so wet that they squeak. (I sweat a lot.)
Best advice to running newbies?
My dog Bruno, the truly accomplished runner.
Go slower than you think you need to go, and don’t worry about all the tips that you see on social media! Running can’t be fun if you’re always huffing and puffing or stressed out about if you’re doing it right (You’ve got plenty of time for both of those things once you’re fully hooked).
Current running goal?
I’m running both the Sydney Marathon and the New York City Marathon this year, so I’m hoping to hit PRs in both.
Any other fun running facts about you?
Not me, but my dog once ran a 20-miler and acted like it wasn’t a huge deal. I mean, I also ran the 20-miler, but it’s not as impressive.
