May Runner of the Month: Kelsey Baumberger
When did you join NBR and why?
I joined NBR in fall 2025 after I moved back to the neighborhood because my BFF Brent (king of 7 Bridges) had been running with the group and encouraged me to join. One of my favorite things to tell people about Brent is that he got into running after he came to a marathon party at my house in 2019 and declared he "could definitely do that".
In what ways have you been involved with NBR?
I am a run leader with Tigerwolves, a frequent attendee of the monthly NBR Trail Run and you'll never miss me at Doves. Being a run leader has been such a great way to get more involved with the group β I'm so grateful that I have had that opportunity!
What do you do when you're not running?
I'm a lawyer (but don't tell the people that). For other hobbies, I like to hang out with my wife and my cat, go to the movies, go to concerts and eat dessert.
How did you initially get into running?
I started running in law school because I saw a bunch of people I went to high school with doing it and I figured if they could, I could. After I moved to the city I hung up my shoes for over a decade but after the marathon in 2024 I was determined to get back into it once and for all. I was living in Park Slope at the time and hooked up with the PPTC Ultra and Trail Crew and the rest is history.
What is your favorite race distance?
50K
Best running memory?
It has to be running down the finish chute at Canyons 100K last month. That was my first 100K and first race longer than a 50K β I think I was in shock. I'm not a weeper but I was surprised to find myself quite weepy while it was happening β it is a feeling I will never forget.
Favorite running route in NYC?
From the neighborhood, over the Manhattan bridge and back to BK over the Williamsburg bridge.
Any running-related superstitions?
Always race in tie-dye
What has running taught you or changed about you?
My body can do so much more than I ever thought it could.
Favorite post-race food?
I'm a bad post-race eater, but β¦ beer?
Favorite song to run to / that makes you want to run?
This answer really freaks people out but I don't really listen to music when I run. Or think about anything. But if I were going to, it would be anything TV on the Radio.
Favorite running social media account?
I'm obsessively following @rachel_entrekin after her incredible Cocadona 250 finish. Don't ask me about any male runners but I'm following all the ultra girls, they are so cool and inspiring. Girls rule!
What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?
I don't really think there is a worst thing but my wife would say itβs my lack of toenails and the amount of laundry I create.
Best advice to running newbies?
Stick with it β To me the coolest part of running is finding out what your body can do. Our bodies are so amazing!
Current running goal?
Where do I start? Currently trying to organize the 100th running of the crownimals, planning a Manhattan perimeter run on Sat June 20 (join!) and I am signed up for the Bandera 100K next January. Thinking about going for a 100 miler next year β¦
Any other fun running facts about you?
I think the only thing better than running an ultra is crewing an ultra β hit me up to crew your next race!
