July Runner of the Month: Lucy Adams

When did you join NBR and why?

I joined North Brooklyn Runners in February 2025. After moving to New York in September 2024, I was looking for a way to meet people, explore the city, and keep up a running routine, especially in the bleakness of winter. (I also wanted to get off my phone and out of the apartment.) I kept seeing things about NBR online, and it seemed like a good fit. I went to Saturday Morning Bridge Run and had a blast. Running over the bridge was exhilarating and people were so friendly. I immediately knew I wanted to keep coming to NBR runs.

In what ways have you been involved with NBR?

My ideal week with NBR is Monday Night Easy Run, Thursday Night Track, and a run on the weekends, either Saturday Morning Bridge Run or a long run. I hope to get more involved with volunteering, cheering, and non-running activities. (If anyone’s looking for ideas, I propose an NBR variety/talent show.)

What do you do when you're not running?

Once a month, instead of Saturday Morning Bridge Run or Narwhals, I also like to volunteer with an awesome group in my neighborhood called Comunidad Primero. Every month, the organization distributes fresh produce, clothing, and toys to families in Bushwick and Ridgewood. Check out the Instagram (@comunidadprimero) or let me know if you want any more info/want to get involved!

How did you initially get into running?

My very first foray into running is all thanks to my mom, who signed me up for Girls on the Run in second grade. Girls on the Run uses discussion and running to empower young girls, and it was SO FUN. After that, I ran cross country and track in middle school and high school. I loved the freedom of running unsupervised in little groups around town or getting muddy in the woods. I didn’t run much in college but got back into it after graduating and eventually moving to the city.

What is your favorite race distance?

I haven’t run that many races, but I definitely enjoy running longer distances in general. I don’t usually hit my stride until at least mile four or five. I’ve loved the two half marathons I’ve run, as well as a trail race in the New Jersey Palisades that was supposed to be 8K but ended up closer to nine miles for me (oops).

Best running memory?

Manhattan Summer Streets last year blew other running experiences out of the water. Combining the infrastructure of a race with the vibe of a chill long run made for such a magical day. I loved being able to get water (and a free banana) along the route, listen to music, and enjoy carless streets. I bonded with my NBR buddies and ended the morning with a mango smoothie from McDonald’s. I also had a blast at this year’s NYCRuns Brooklyn Experience Half Marathon in April. Good weather, good running buddies, and some glitter made for a perfect race day and a 13 minute PR for me.

Favorite running route in NYC?

Like most NYC runners, I love running over bridges and in parks. I do my best to seek out tree-lined streets and extra wide sidewalks. My favorite running route is anywhere by the water. If there’s a breeze and the skyline is visible, I’m an extra happy girl.

Any running-related superstitions?

I wore the same hair bow for every cross country and track race in high school. I should bring that back.

What has running taught you or changed about you?

No part of me has been untouched by running. Running has made me more resilient and optimistic. Running has brought me community. Running has strengthened my sense of self. I feel most β€œme” when I’m running. My gratitude for the sport of running and for the running community is immense.

Favorite post-race food?

Some kind of sandwich for lunch, preferably with lots of sauce/condiments. A burrito or some kind of noodles for dinner. Ice cream for dessert.

Favorite song to run to / that makes you want to run?

UCLA by RL Grime is one of my all-time favorite running songs. I love sprinting during the chorus, especially on runs when I need a little kick in the butt.

Favorite running social media account?

Because I’ve found myself getting sucked deeper and deeper into ultra content online, my favorite running social media account right now is @emilyjanefairs. She’s a young British ultramarathoner, and she’s an absolute beast.

What do you think is the worst part about being a runner?

Now, I have a hard time sleeping in on the weekends even when I try. Also, I use running as an excuse to procrastinate all the things I actually need to do.

Best advice to running newbies?

Believe in yourself. You can do it!

Current running goal?

I want to run a marathon. I’d love to do the TCS New York City Marathon this year or next, but I’m actually still not even an NYRR member. My curiosity around trail running and ultra running is also growing. I’m trying to find ways to scratch that itch!

Any other fun running facts about you?

I love running hills.
